Facts About Sport Injuries
1
Almost 40% of all dental injuries in children happen during contact sports. Boys have a peak incidence of 8 to 11 years of age and are more likely to suffer an injury than girls.
2
The most common injuries are to the upper incisors and can result in the permanent, adult tooth/teeth, being discoloured, fractured or lost.
The Benefits of a Sports Guard
A well-fitted mouth protector will cover the upper teeth and help cushion against any blows to the face. This drastically reduces the risk of broken teeth, soft tissue injuries to the mouth and concussions.
If you wear braces or a fixed dental appliance on your lower jaw, you should protect these teeth as well with a mouth guard.
The Process
A Custom Fit for Powerful Protection
We will create a custom made mouthguard by taking an impression of your teeth and then having our dental laboratory build your mouthguard to perfectly fit your mouth.
Aftercare
Once you’ve received your new mouthguard, you should always keep it in its protective case whenever you aren’t using it. As you grow older it’s a good idea to have your mouth checked every year or so to make sure your mouth hasn’t changed and that the guard is still fitting properly.
FAQs
Is there any difference between a store bought mouthguard and a fitted one?
Yes. As the old saying goes, you get what you pay for! And the difference between the two is significant.
Store bought protectors are pre-formed and though they may claim that ‘one size fits all’ the reality is they usually don’t fit anyone very well. They also tend to be bulky which can make talking and breathing more difficult.
Custom-fitted mouth guards from Camlough Dental will fit comfortably and securely and will absorb energy from direct blows more effectively. This protection can reduce potential damage to the teeth and help protect against jaw fractures. Finally, a properly fitted mouth protector will stay in place and make it easier to talk and breathe.
Do I need to wear a mouthguard?
If you play high contact sports where a boot, ball, racquet, stick, fist or elbow can hit you in the head then, yes, you should be wearing a mouthguard! It’s a proven fact that there is a dramatic drop in mouth injuries among those that wear them versus those that don’t. Also, it is compulsory in Gaelic football and rugby.
Should I use a mouth protector if I wear braces?
Yes – people who wear braces or have had expensive cosmetic dental work are incredibly susceptible to injury and damage to brackets or other fixed orthodontic appliances.
