Repair and Restore – Simply and Quickly

Composite Bonding is a cost effective and fast way to repair chipped, cracked or discoloured teeth and rejuvenate your smile by applying and shaping a restorative resin. It can also be a fantastic alternative to veneers and can be used to fill spaces between teeth and even change their shape.

The Benefits of Composite Bonding

Composite bonding uses a resin that comes in a wide range of shades, allowing your dentist to match the colour of the surrounding teeth.

The process is quick and simple and usually only requires a single visit to our practice and it can be used to address a number of issues such as:

  • Chips or cracks
  • Gaps between teeth
  • Worn-down teeth
  • Stains or discolouration
  • Teeth lengthening
  • Minor misalignments

The Process

How Bonding and Contouring Works

First, your dentist will help you select the shade of resin that suits your natural tooth colour. They will then very gently and lightly roughen the tooth surface and apply a conditioning liquid to help the bonding material stick securely to the surface.

Then, once the bonding material is in place, state of the art, specific light is used to harden it so it can be polished and shaped- all in about an hour’s time!

Aftercare for Composite Bonding

Once you’ve had your composite bonding treatment, proper aftercare is essential to make sure you get the best from your new smile and that it lasts for many years.

Here are some key tips to follow:

  • Maintain good oral hygiene- Brush your teeth twice daily with a soft-bristled toothbrush, interdental brushing or floss at least once a day
  • Avoid staining foods and drinks like coffee, tea, red wine, and curry which can discolour the bonding material over time. If you do consume them, rinse your mouth with water.
  • Be Careful of hard and sticky foods – Chewing on hard sweets, ice, or nuts can chip or damage the bonding
  • Avoid chewing on fingernails, pens, or other hard objects
  • Schedule regular dental checkups -this allows your dentist to monitor the bonding and address any potential issues early on
  • If you grind your teeth at night, a nightguard can protect your bonding from damage.

FAQs

Does bonding and contouring hurt?

Not at all. Unlike fillings, veneers or other cosmetic treatments, your dentist will not remove any part of your tooth, so there may be no need for anaesthetic or numbing gel. It is completely pain free and fast.

Is composite bonding permanent?

If you look after your newly restored teeth the bonding resin can last a very long time- sometimes up to 10 years or more. And though the composite resin is incredibly durable, it’s not as strong as your natural teeth and may chip away over time or break off completely. However, if this does happen it is quite easy to repair again.

Is cosmetic bonding right for me?

If your teeth are healthy and strong and you’re simply looking for a cosmetic solution there is a very good chance that bonding and contouring will be a perfect solution for you. However, if you suffer from an overbite or underbite that affects your bite, bonding will not correct this and you may need a more in-depth treatment such as orthodontics.
