The End of Dentures as You Know Them
For decades, dentures have been used as a simple and common solution to large scale tooth loss. These dentures are made of an acrylic base and teeth that fit over your gums to give the impression of a full set of teeth. However, over time, they can become an annoying inconvenience and can even cause damage to your mouth.
Implant for dentures, also known as implant supported dentures, work by strategically placing implants in your jaw bone and attaching custom-made dentures to them. This creates an extremely secure denture that allows you to eat the foods you love and feel confident with your new and improved smile.
The Benefits of Implants for Dentures
Unlike traditional dentures, implant supported dentures won’t slip or slide in your mouth. Because they are anchored directly to the jawbone, the implants provide better chewing, better speech and improved confidence!

The Process of Getting Implants for Dentures
The process of having implant supported dentures put in place is a bit more involved than single or multiple implants, which you can read about below.
Like other implant procedures, we will still place a number of implants into your jawbone and give them plenty of time to heal (usually 3-6 months). Once they are fully integrated, we will attach a small connector (called an abutment) to each implant. These will serve as the bridge between the implant and the denture.
We will then take impressions of your mouth to create your custom-made denture that will attach to the abutments.
Finally, we will attach your new dentures to the abutments.
Aftercare for Your New Implants for Dentures
You should always follow a good oral hygiene regimen, especially with your new implant supported dentures. We recommend the following:
- Oral Hygiene- Brush twice daily with a soft toothbrush and use interdental brushes around the implant sites. We may recommend special cleaning tools for optimal hygiene
- Denture Care- Even with implant support, it’s a good idea to remove your denture at night for cleaning and to let your gums rest. You will need to clean the denture daily with a denture brush and cleanser
- Regular Dental Visits- Schedule regular checkups and cleanings with your dentist to make sure the implants and surrounding tissues are healthy
- Diet- While you can gradually return to a normal diet, be mindful of very hard or sticky foods that might damage the denture
- Smoking Cessation- Smoking can negatively impact healing and implant success. If you smoke, quitting is highly recommended.
FAQs
Are retained dentures easy to take care of?
Yes! Your new implant-retained denture has special attachments (abutments) that connect to your implants, allowing you to remove them quickly and easily. You should remove your dentures twice a day for cleaning. We also recommended that you brush around the attachments and the gums and take your dentures out each night before you fall asleep.
Are implants for dentures right for me?
Before we perform any type of implant we will schedule a convenient time to speak to you and make a thorough assessment of your oral health and your suitability for the treatment. This is also a great time for you to ask questions you may have about the treatment and any available options. However, if your overall oral health is good, you are probably a good candidate.
Why do I need to remove my denture?
It’s important to remove your implant retained dentures regularly so you can get rid of any food trapped under your dentures and prevent bacteria from growing. Even though your dentures won’t decay, your gums are still susceptible to disease. Also, if you ever need your dentures to be repaired, removing them makes the process much easier.
